Course of History

January 21st, 2009

Many believe that mankind today is somehow essentially different then ancient people.  Through the refinement of societal structures, mental evolution or the advancement of technology the human is a more advanced creature with fundamentally different reactions to environment and events than our ancestors.  I don’t believe this is the case.  In fact, I believe that particular world view is more destructive to a person and a society than simple ignorance of the past.  It is intentional ignorance puffed up by arrogance,  and self righteous ignorance usually leads down very dark paths.

I believe a look at human reactions to events in the past reveals patterns in our nature that can give us insight to our current situations.  Perhaps not on a personal level, as it’s very difficult to see the past with such granularity, but certainly it’s possible to see how humans react in the wider brush strokes of history.

It’s with this course grained approach that we can begin to see the repeating patterns that can help us avoid the temptations that have lead to our darkest times.  With this approach I’ll share with you the patterns I see from our past and where we are repeating them.  From where I see our greatest hopes and our worst fears, I hope you will join me in the conversation.
